Alternative Programs

  • Classic Shell - Are you missing some features to you liked in XP now that you're running Windows 7? For example, XP's Classic Start Menu is an easy way to launch dozens of programs with just a few keystrokes, but the option is gone from Windows 7. Many former XP users also miss the Explorer toolbar's cut, copy, paste, and other buttons for performing common operations with a single click. After you install the utility, the Start menu behaves the way it did in XP; however, you can revert to the standard Vista/Win7 functionality by Shift-clicking the Start button. The program's optional Explorer toolbar appears on the right side of the menu bar, where it takes up as little screen real estate as necessary.
  • Mozilla Firefox - award-winning Web browser, fast, secure, and fully customizable.
  • Google Chrome is easily the quickest browser available and instead of the traditional toolbar, Chrome puts its tabs on top. Moreover, the tabs are detachable: "tabs" and "windows" are interchangeable here. Detached tabs can be dragged and dropped into the browser, and tabs can be rearranged at any time. By isolating each tab's processes, when one site crashes, the other tabs do not.
  • Mozilla Thunderbird - alternative to Outlook Express, will import your existing email accounts and messages from Outlook Express and it has powerful quick search, spell check as you type, global inbox, deleting attachments and advanced message filtering.
  • Foxit Reader is a free PDF document viewer and printer, with incredible small size (only 1.67 M download size), breezing-fast launch speed and amazingly rich feature set - a great alternative to the bloated Adobe Acrobat and it won't nag you to download updates.
  • PDFCreator - create your own PDF documents with this easy-to-use, free tool that enables you to create PDF files from any program that is able to print. PDFCreator won't hog computer resources like another well known PDF reader.
  • OpenOffice.org - a credible rival to Microsoft Office, includes applications for making text documents, spreadsheets, presentations, diagrams, databases, and HTML and XML documents.
  • IrfanView - image viewer that lets you open and edit images, as well as multiple media formats. You can cut and crop images, apply batch conversions, add, sharpen, or blur effects, create panoramas, and change color modes easily.
  • Paint.NET - is a free image and photo editing software for computers that run Windows. It features an intuitive and innovative user interface with support for layers, unlimited undo, special effects, and a wide variety of useful and powerful tools. An active and growing online community provides friendly help, tutorials, and plugins.
